On June 18, 2019 the Russian International Affairs Council (RIAC) along with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) held a round-table discussion on the issues of development of international cooperation in the field of management of maritime spaces in the Arctic region.

Dr. Ivan V. Bunik, PhD, adjunct professor of School of Governments and International Affairs MGIMO University, attorney-at-law at Moscow Law Firm “Timofeev, Vahrenwald and Partners” took part in the conference.

The leading Russian and foreign specialists discussed the prospects for the implementation of joint projects within the Arctic Council for the management of the central part of the Arctic Ocean as well as the achieved results, current activities and plans of the Arctic Council on the conservation and management of maritime spaces in the Arctic. Particular attention was given to the approaches to the management of maritime spaces and the regulation of particular maritime activities in the Arctic outside the projects of the Arctic Council and options for creating a regional integrated marine management mechanism in the Arctic.

Following the discussion, the participants agreed on the necessity of further development of the capabilities of the Arctic Council to improve international cooperation in the Arctic region, as well as on the significance of strengthening of the legal framework for activities in the Arctic and conducting comprehensive research comprising knowledge from various fields.
